A famous line from a reality show where hopes and ambitions of young dreamers came into reality. This was also the favorite line which served as a strong factor that changed the life of an ordinary boy to a highly skilled athlete who brought fame and honor not only in our school but to the country as well. His participation in the field of sports both in the national and international arena paved the way for Nilo Calunsag Ledama as most outstanding athlete in tennis.
The story of his great success began in his early childhood where he often saw his father playing tennis. His father must have been the figure who strongly influenced him to love the game. He was tagged as “polot boy†who frequently picked up the tennis ball and satisfied himself by smashing the ball using his wooden rocket.
During his elementary years, he joined open invitational tournaments. Gradually his experience, confidence and self-esteem were developed. He brought fame to the region being the sole gold medalist during the 2014 PALARONG PAMBANSA held at Tagum City.
He pursued junior high at Zamboanga del Sur National High School and chose to enroll in the Special Program in Sports, tennis as his major area of specialization. The trained SPS teacher-coach played a vital role in the life of the athlete, Mrs. Adely A. Mendoza.
His exposures led him to achieve things and even surpassed our expectations. “ Itâ€s a long process but I persevered in order to improve his personality and self- discipline†coach Mendoza added.
Driven by his great passion in tennis, his performance was said to be exceptional. As a matter of fact he joined the Philippine team and compete with other athletes in the international arena. These tournaments were sponsored by private sectors and other sports enthusiasts who envisioned to produce quality athletes who can compete globally.
Among these sectors and private companies are Palawan Pawnshop ,Cebuana Lhuiller and Globe Telecom. Likewise, the local government unit of Pagadian City through the City Mayor extended full financial support to the student athlete in his International competition.
Receiving an all out support from his family, ZSNHS SPS, coach, friends and tennis enthusiasts have contributed a lot to the success of his endeavors. He made a history through his achievements. At a young age, he is so accomplished. During the competitions held at Penang, Malaysia last November 24- December 3, 2019, he earned another gold being the champion in doubles category and got silver medal in the singles category.
His performance also in Perlis, Malaysia, last December 4-8, 2019 was very impressive being the champion in both singles and doubles category. He came home victorious with the awards received as gold medalist in doubles and second place in the singles category played during the International Junior Tennis Championship in Thailand last December 9-13,2018.
The blazing star and pride of Pagadian City will represent the Palarong Pambansa in Davao City in May 2019. May he bring home the bacon again!
